Canadian Red Cross Babysitting Course Kelowna

Learn how to start your own babysitting business with our Canadian Red Cross Babysitting course.

Offers basic first aid and caregiving skills for youth 11-15 years old. Participants learn how to provide care to younger children in a variety of age groups, how to promote safe behaviours, and how to prevent & respond to emergencies. The course also offers youth the skills to promote themselves as babysitters and child care professionals to prospective families.

DURATION
7-8 hours

COURSE HOURS:
• 8:15 am start time (8:30 am after paperwork)
• 30 minutes for lunch
• 4-4:30 pm end time
There will also be a mid-morning and mid-afternoon break as well.

PREREQUISITE
Minimum 11 years of age (or completion of grade 5) NO EXCEPTIONS

COURSE CONTENT

  • How to be responsible and demonstrate leadership
  • How to make good decisions and manage difficult behaviors
  • Information on children’s developmental stages, and specific strategies for each stage
  • How to feed, diaper, dress, and play with children and babies
  • How to recognize and prevent unsafe situations, make safe choices and promote safe behaviors
  • The business of babysitting
  • First aid skills
Check, Call, Care: This covers steps to take in an emergency, including phoning EMS/911.
Glove removal.
Recovery position.
Conscious choking (adult/child/baby, when alone).
CPR for babies and children.
Dealing with illness, asthma (including inhaler and spacer use), and anaphylaxis (including EpiPen use).
Handling cases of poisoning, insect stings, and various wound care situations (minor cuts, scrapes, splinters, nosebleeds, bumps, bruises, life-threatening bleeding, and burns).
Managing head, neck, and back injuries, as well as broken bones and seizures.
